Day 2, Houston ESL official games are very exciting and competitive! - Aug 4, 2012
Game 1: Mexico City 52 Dubai 49 This was a very competitive contest featuring two quality teams for the first game of the day. However Mexico City was too strong in the end and squeaked out a 52-49 win. This game went down to the final minutes as both teams wanted the win; however one team could only grab the victory. Brandon Obrien (198-F) had an outstanding game scoring 26 points and grabbing 2 rebounds. Gregory Plummer (193-G-83, college: Eckerd) had a nice floor game as he chipped in 13 points for the winning team. Kenny LaGuerre (205-F/C-85) had a solid performance for Dubai as he led his team with 10 points and 6 rebounds. Marcus Smallwood (198-F-82, agency: Court Side, college: N.Illinois) helped out the cause contributing 9 points and 6 rebounds and 2 assists

Game 2: Okinawa 54 Buenos Aires 52 Okinawas balanced attack and professional play separated them from Buenos Aires late in the game and they never looked back. Griffen Warren (178-PG-86) was very solid as he scored 13 pts and 2 rbs and 2 assists for the winners. Raason Young (198-F, college: Montana St. - Billin) chipped in 10 pts, 3 rbs, 1 ast for the winners in support. Andre Bailey led Buenos Aires with 11 pts, 7 rbs and 3 asts in defeat.

Game 3: Tokyo 67 Dubai 60 This game was very competitive and came down to the final minutes as Tokyo was able to hold off Dubai and keep the victory 67-60. Tokyo had a balanced attack as three men scored 17 pts each and they were Lamont Houston (170-PG-86, college: Warner), Morris Smith (193-G-87, college: UTSA) and Yan Moukoury (201-F-88). and 5 rebs. Richard Thomas led Dubai with 19 pts, while Kenny LaGuerre added 17 pts and 9 rbs.

Game 4: Mexico City 76 Buenos Aires 70 This game was a track meet as Mexico City again displayed poise and a balanced attack to take the victory 76-70. Brandon Obrien led all scorers with 25 pts while Gregory Plummer added 21 pts in the victory. Buenos Aires has very much talent, but have not put it all together yet. However, Daniel Bryant shined with 17 pts while Vernard Posey chipped in 8 pts and 8 asts for the losing team.

Game 5: Okinawa 80 Tokyo 72 This game was a close contest and the game went back and forth however, Okinawa was able to pull out the victory with a 80-72 score over Tokyo. Again, Okinawa displayed a balanced attack as they were led by Jeremy Lewis with 20 pts, while Terrance Hill had 19 pts and Raason Young chipped in 17 pts. Tokyo had a balanced attack as well, but it was not enough as big man Yan Moukoury led the losing team with 23 pts.

Game 6: Dubai 76 Buenos Aires 50 Dubai shaked off the early morning losses and got a much needed victory 62-52. Dubai really had a balanced attack in the victory being led by JejuJejuan Plair wth 14 pts, Richard Thomas had 13 pts and followed by Marcus Smallwood with 12 pts. On the other side for the losing team only one player really stood out for them as Calvin Jenkins had 16 pts.

Game 7: Mexico City 71 Tokyo 65 This game was a very competitive game that saw two very good teams and an unbeaten Mexico City team stay unbeaten with a 71-65 victory. Down the stretch Mexico City put it together and was too much for Tokyo down the stretch. Mexico City was led by Brandon Obrien with 27 points and was virtually unstoppable. The veteran, Gregory Plummer chipped in 13 pts. Morris Smith had 26 pts and 5 rbs for Tokyo in the close loss for his team.

Game 8: Dubai 76 Okinawa 63 This game was not a very close contest as the game got out of hand early and Dubai held onto the victory even though Okinawa made several attempts to get back in the game. Dubai was able to pull out the victory with a 76-63 score over Okinawa for their second victory of the day. Jejaun Plair had 17 pts and led Dubai. On the losing side for Okinawa, Griffen Warren had 20 pts.

Here is the weekly review of the top performing Eurobasket Summer League players, who play currently pro basketball. Here is the weekly review of the top performing Eurobasket Summer League players, who play currently pro basketball.
#1. Robert Holcomb Faye (185-G-84, college: Radford, currently plays in Holland), who plays in the Dutch Eredivisie could not help Leeuwarden (20-16) in their last game. Despite his very good performance Leeuwarden was edged 74-73 on the road by the second-ranked Leiden.
Holcomb Faye was the top scorer with 25 points. He also added 6 rebounds and 6 assists in 34 minutes.
Holcomb Faye is currently first on the league's list of best passers and also on the list of most steals (fifth place).
He has very reliable stats this year: 12.4ppg, 3.3rpg, 7.2apg and 1.9spg in the 46 games he played so far.
He attended previously one of camps at Eurobasket Summer League on his way to pro basketball. In 2008 Holcomb Faye went to the ESL camp in Las Vegas playing for Team Brussels.
#2. Akeem Wright (200-SF-84, college: Kansas St., currently plays in New Zealand) led Otago OceanaGold Nuggets to a victory over the seventh-ranked Taranaki MA (2-6) 110-93 in the New Zealand NBL last Saturday.
Wright was MVP of the game. He recorded a double-double by scoring 35 points and getting 10 rebounds. Wright also added 7 assists, 3 blocks and 5 steals.
Otago OceanaGold Nuggets (7-0) are placed first in the NBL.
So far his team won all seven games in the Regular Season.
Wright belongs to league's top scorers and is ranked #2.
He has individually a very good season with high stats. Wright averages: 22.4ppg, 7.3rpg, 2.9apg and 2.4spg.
Worth to mention Wright played also at Eurobasket Summer League, which helped him get the job in pro basketball. Four years ago he took part in the ESL camp in New York playing for Team Kiev.
#3. Emmanuel Little (196-F-85, college: N.Dakota, currently plays in Mexico), who plays in the Mexican CIBACOPA could not help Rayos de Hermosillo (22-5) in their last game. Despite his very good performance the league leader Rayos de Hermosillo was edged 78-76 on the road by the lower-ranked (#4) Fuerza Guinda Nogales.
Little had a double-double by scoring 26 points and getting 11 rebounds. He also added 5 assists in 32 minutes.
Little has relatively good stats this year: 12.8ppg, 5.8rpg and 3.0apg in the 26 games he played so far.
He is a former Eurobasket Summer League player, which is considered top summer league for players who want to play basketball overseas. Five years ago Little played at the ESL camp in Chicago playing for London.
#4. Agnis Cavars (196-F-86, currently plays in Latvia) contributed to Valmiera's victory against the closely-ranked Barons kvartals (21-13) 72-65 in the Latvian LBL in Wednesday night's game.
He scored 9 points and grabbed 9 rebounds.
It was the game of the round between two top 4 ranked teams. BK Valmiera (22-12) is placed first in the LBL.
It was his team's sixth consecutive victory in a row.
Cavars is currently fifth on the list of best rebounders.
His overall stats this season are: 9.5ppg and 7.6rpg.
He is a former Eurobasket Summer League player, which is considered top international summer league in the market. In 2011 Cavars attended the ESL camp in Cologne, Germany playing for Team Belgrade.
#5. Bilal Benn (196-G/F-86, college: Niagara, currently plays in Israel) was the major contributor in an Ironi Nes-Ziona's victory against the closely-ranked Hod Hasharon (18-8) 125-119 in the Israeli National League (second division) last Tuesday.
He had a double-double by scoring 26 points and getting 12 rebounds. Benn also added 3 assists and 4 steals in 58 minutes; quite an impressive performance considering it's only his third season in pro basketball. It was the game of the round between two top 4 ranked teams. Ironi Nes-Ziona (22-4) is placed first in the National League.
Benn is ranked third on the list of the most steals in the league with 2.7spg.
This year he also averages: 18.2ppg, 9.2rpg and 4.1apg in the 35 games he played so far.
Benn played in 2010at the Eurobasket Summer League in Las Vegas for Team Zurich.
#6. Jermaine Barnes (194-G/F-82, college: Point, GA, currently plays in UBA) led GIE Maile Matrix to a victory over the Georgia Spartans (12-9) 94-86 in the UBA on Saturday night.
He was the best player in that game. Barnes recorded 35 points (!!!), 5 rebounds and 6 assists.
The GIE Maile Matrix has a solid 14-7 record this season.
His team will play only one more game in the UBA Regular Season. And that game will be critical.
Barnes is currently first on the list of top scorers and also on the list of best passers (second place).
He has individually a very good season with high stats. Barnes averages: 27.9ppg, 7.6rpg, 7.0apg and 2.2spg.
Barnes attended two years ago the Eurobasket Summer League camp in Houston.
#7. Phillippe Harris (180-G-85, agency: Athlete Management Group, college: Fayetteville St., currently plays in Mexico), who plays in the Mexican CIBACOPA could not help Pioneros Los Mochis (9-16) in their last game. Despite Harris' very good performance Pioneros Los Mochis lost 83-95 on the road to the second-ranked Ostioneros de Guaymas.
He was the second best scorer with 22 points. Harris also added 7 boards, dished 3 assists and stole 3 balls in 26 minutes.
This year Harris has relatively solid stats: 13.3ppg, 4.0rpg, 4.3apg and 1.3spg in the six games he played so far.
Worth to mention he played also for Team Munich at the ESL in Salt Lake City in 2008.
#8. Sammy Monroe (198-F-85, college: Newberry, currently plays in Mexico), who plays in the Mexican CIBACOPA could not help Mineros de Cananea (11-16) in their last game on Tuesday. Despite Monroe's very good performance Mineros de Cananea was badly defeated 105-88 on the road by the leading Rayos de Hermosillo.
He was the second best scorer with 18 points. Monroe also added 5 rebounds, passed 5 assists and added 2 blocks.
Monroe is currently second on the list of top scorers and also on the list of best blockers (fifth place).
He has individually a very good season with high stats. Monroe averages: 24.8ppg, 6.3rpg, 2.7apg, 1.1bpg and 1.5spg.
He played three years ago at the ESL in Las Vegas for Team Geneva.
#9. Akeem Scott (186-PG-83, college: High Point, currently plays in Venezuela), who plays in the Venezuelan LPB could not help one of league's weakest teams Guaiqueries (19-32) in their last game. Despite Scott's very good performance Guaiqueries was badly defeated 105-87 on the road by the higher-ranked (#7) Trotamundos.
He was the top scorer with 18 points. Scott also added made 4 passes and 4 steals in 25 minutes.
There are only three games left until the end of the Regular Season. So now every game will be critical.
Scott has reliable stats this year: 10.8ppg, 2.2rpg, 2.4apg and 3.6spg in the five games he played so far.
He is a naturalized American.
He attended in 2011 the ESL camp in Las Vegas.
#10. Dwight Thorne (190-PG-88, college: Colorado, currently plays in Croatia) contributed to a 1-point KK Zadar's victory against the fourth-ranked Jolly (7-7) 77-76 in the Croatian A1 in Tuesday night's game.
He scored 8 points.
KK Zadar (11-3) is placed third in Places 1-8 group.
It was his team's fifth consecutive victory in a row.
They will play only one more game in the Second Stage. And that game will be critical.
Thorne's overall stats this season are: 7.0ppg, 1.7rpg and 1.4apg.
Worth to mention Thorne played also for Team Kiev at the ESL in Las Vegas last year.

The Eurobasket Summer League has gained the reputation as being the top summer league showcase in the U.S. for professional basketball players and now is back in Europe. Jason attended Eurobasket Summer League in Las Vegas this summer where he won the Championship with Union Monaco and was voted Co-MVP!
