Marshall's Floater lifts Eurobasket Select to 73-72 Win over Dusseldorf - Aug 31, 2017

The Eurobasket Select Team had a dramatic come from behind win in ART Giants Duesseldorf on Wednesday night as Alvernia's 6'5 G/F Marquis Marshall (196-F-93, college: Alvernia, PA) went coast to coast for a game winning floater with just 1 second left on the clock. With Eurobasket down by two, Nick Trisko (203-C, college: Spalding) got fouled after securing a critical offensive rebound amongst 4 Dusseldorf defenders. Trisko would split the pair to put cut the lead to one. With 10 seconds remaining on the clock Dusseldorf had a chance to extend the lead to 3 at the free throw but after two missed free throws, Trisko again secured the rebound and let Marshall do the rest. Marshall, who had a game 21 points took the ball to the basket and secured the win.

'We only had 7 players, we were without our Head Coach (who all were at another game against the Artland Dragons), and we were down 12 late in the 3rd. We had every reason to give up but I challenged our guys to fight through the fatigue, pressure the ball, and get good shots the rest of the way,' Tour Director Dustin Simcox said. 'If we play the right way, I think we can compete with just about anyone.'

The players suited up for Eurobasket included Marshall, Trisko, Grant Prusator (183-PG-94, college: Arkansas Tech), Zach Gordon (203-F-93, college: Cal Poly - SLO), Drew Sears (213-G), Arvel Atwater (196-F), and Killven Samuel (188-G-89, college: Northeastern St.). Samuel was a spark plug all night long on the offensive and defensive end. He ended the game with 18 points, 3 rebounds, 3 assists, and 5 steals while getting to the free line 11 times. 'Killven has been amazing for us on the defensive end during this whole tour. He had 5 steals tonight and 6 steals against Salzkotten. He is a player from the British Virgin Islands with the capability of having a English passport. I think he is going to be around these European pro leagues for years to come,' Simcox said.

Seattle natives Drew Sears and Zach Gordon, who grew up playing AAU Club basketball together in the Pacific Northwest played key factors as well. Sears, a 6'10 Center that played his college ball at Whitworth College had 10 points and 6 rebounds, including two big three point field goals when Dusseldorf started pulling away. Gordon, a 6'8 Forward from D1 Cal Poly San Luis Obispo battled inside all night. 'That was the most physical game I have ever played tonight,' Gordon said. However, fighting through that physicality and doing whatever the team needed is exactly what he provided. He brought down a tour high 12 rebounds and had 3 blocks including, two in the final minutes of the 4th quarter.

The final two members of this 7 man squad was Grant Prusator from Arkansas Tech and Arvel Atwater from Allen University in South Carolina. Both players are known for being dead eye shooters but on this night when shots aren't falling like they normally do, you have to do other things to help the team win. That is exactly what they did on the defensive end. Atwater was active all over the floor making it difficult for the Dusseldorf wings to get anything going. He accumulated 3 steals and deflected several others. Prusator on the other hand took the challenge on the front lines of the Eurobasket defense. 'I challenged the guys to step up the defensive intensity and that starts with the PG. Despite playing 34 minutes tonight, he still managed to pressure the ball full court the entire second half. He lead by example and I am sure the pressure on the ball were amped the guys behind him to do the same,' Simcox said. Prusator now had 10 steals in just 3 games on the tour.

Eurobasket will be back together as a full team on Thursday as they travel to Iserlohn to play against the Kangaroos. Stay tuned for news on how the other half of the team fared against the Artland Dragons and how they do in Iserlohn.
