The Eurobasket Select Team split their double header on Saturday with a win of Vfl Stade and a defeat to Cuxhaven. The first game of the day that featured 7 members of the Eurobasket team battled all the way to the finish but came up just short. Cuxhaven went on a big run in the second quarter as Zach Gordon (203-F-93, college: Cal Poly - SLO), Drew Sears (209-C), and Killven Samuel (188-G-89, college: Northeastern St.) all got into foul trouble putting a strain on the 7 man rotation. 'It is really tough when you have a split squad and two of your bigs get into foul trouble. You have to take them out but just don't have the depth to fight in a physical game,' Eurobasket Head Coach Allen Mkrtychyan said. Taking a 19 point halftime lead, Cuxhaven looked to be in cruise control.

However, this was the same 7 man team that had a 14 point come from behind win against Dusseldorf (minus Marquis Marshall (196-F-93, college: Alvernia, PA) who has since joined a team in the regionalliga). They continued to fight to end through fatigue, foul trouble, and through the injury to Grant Prusator (183-PG-94, college: Arkansas Tech) (who did return to the game). Entering the fourth quarter down 15 points it was now or never. Multiple three point field goals from Samuel and Prusator, accompanied by energetic drives of Quaderrick Shaw (191-G-93, college: Florida St.), and hard work inside from Nick Trisko (203-C, college: Spalding) they continued to cut into the lead. Trisko would knock down a three pointer with under two minutes to go to cut the lead to one. Unfortunately for Eurobasket, Cuxhaven would respond and pull out a narrow 5 point win. Eurobasket was lead statistically by Trisko who had his tour high game of 19 points and 8 rebounds. Samuel added 17 points, 4 rebounds, 3 assists, and 4 steals. Prusator has his tour high of 16 points to go with 4 assists and Shaw would add 13 points and 6 rebounds. A fourth member also scored in double digits as Arvel Atwater (196-F) knocked down a couple three pointers on route to 10 points.

The night cap featured a game 1 hour and 15 minutes away in Stade, Germany against Paul Larysz and his Vfl Stade team. This group of 7 lead by starters Kenny Bellinger (185-G-92, college: Armstr.Atlantic), Quaderrick Shaw, Ryan Burnett (196-G/F-92, college: Columbus St.), Jordan Stotts (203-F-93, college: Sioux Falls), and Kris Bell (206-F/C, college: Ft.Valley St.) would jump on Stade early and take a big lead for the first time all tour. The charge was led by Bell and Burnett in the first quarter. Each scored 8 points in the opening stanza on a very efficient 6-8 shooting combined. Bell was the catalyst all night for Eurobasket. He shot 8 of 15 from the floor on route to his team high 18 points and 11 rebounds. 'This was by far Kris' best game for us. He decided to take the ball to the basket and use his 6'10 245 pound frame to his advantage. There are not a lot of people in these leagues that can stop him when he has mentality,' Mkrtychyan said.

Eurobasket's lead was as high as 20 points, but Stade would continue to chip away in the second half. Turnovers which has been a major issue for this tour team during the week started to rise as fatigue set in. 'We have had 9 games in a 9 day period. The heavy minutes and travel started to catch up with us. We had 5 hours worth of travel today with Quad and Zach each playing in both games. That's a lot to ask of our guys,' Tour Director Dustin Simcox said. The first game resulted in foul trouble while the injury bug hit the second game. Luke Cochran (208-C) was knocked out of the game in the 2nd quarter with a broken nose. 'Luke was batting hard on the boards and continued to be aggressive. He just got hit with an elbow and likely will have played his last game on the tour. He fought hard during these past 9 days,' Simcox said.

As mentioned before, Bell lead Eurobasket in both points in rebounds against Stade. But Jordan Stotts notched the second double double of the tour for Eurobasket. He finished with 14 points and 11 rebounds. The other double double came from Gordon against Iserlohn, in his second game of the day replacing Cochran, Gordon grabbed 10 rebounds. Burnett finished with a consistent 14 points as he has on two other occasions during this tour. Eurobasket's journey in Germany is over as they will travel to the Netherlands tomorrow to face two Dutch teams in their final games of the tour.
